At the end of the week, Sopelana will be filled with international surfers, who will come to participate in the Arrieta Beach International Surf Championship, featuring 70 professionals with disabilities of all kinds involved in the sport. The initiative was organized by Peña Txuri Surf Group, the Alvin Bayona Foundation, and the @haimandelpozo account, and was presented today in Bilbao.
Aritza Saratxaga, coordinator of the Pela Txuri Surf School, and Catalan athlete Álvaro 'Alvin' Bayona, recalled that the idea for a surf meet in Sopelana had come to them. Bayona has experience participating in these activities (he has been in a wheelchair since 2010 due to a sports accident and has been a pioneer in adaptations for various extreme sports), and his international contacts realized that the initiative would be successful. So they began to organize.
The culmination of this work will be the international championship on Saturday and Sunday (July 13 and 14). Earlier this afternoon, participants from around the world will be welcomed at the Sopelana Town Hall. Surfers will compete in eight categories, with a prize pool of €17,000. Not only professionals, but also those with disabilities who want to try surfing for the first time will have the opportunity to dive into the water several times, with the help of experts. “It will be a very basic activity, of course,” said Bayonne, “they won’t be riding wave by wave.”
The tournament categories will be:
AS1: waves that can take uprights, but only one or more limbs
We need more surfers.
AS2: Surfers kneeling or sitting on the waves.
AS3: Surfers sitting in a chair on waves.
AS4: Surfers who are making waves and are self-employed.
AS5: except columns, in any position on the board and in the water
surfers who need support while paddling.
AS6: Blind and/or visually impaired surfers.
AS7: Deaf and hard-of-hearing surfers.
AS8: Surfers with intellectual disabilities.
At each level, the first prize will be €600, the second prize €300, and the third prize €200. In addition, the rider for the best wave will win €1,000. The prizes will be the same for both women and men. The awards ceremony will take place at 6 p.m. on Sunday.
“The limits are inside your head”
Together with Peña Txurigaz and the Alvin Bayona Foundation, Aimar del Pozo, a surfer and former student of Peña Txuri, is working on organizing the tournament. “The limits aren’t physical, but rather in our minds,” he said. Four years ago, his friends started surfing, he went to watch them, and met the instructor Aritza Saratxaga. Today, Del Pozo is a surfer himself. “We want to show that we’re sportsmen at night,” he said.
“It will be an international tournament, without any other adjective.”
The representatives of the organizations were the mayor of Sopelana, Josu Landaluze, and Carlos Atxotegi, sports consultant for the Bizkaia Provincial Council. Atxotegi said that “what we will see is an international surfing tournament, which needs no further description; it will be a great sporting spectacle and hopefully will encourage many people to participate in sports.”
Finally, Nora Sarasola, from the BBK Foundation, one of the tournament's promoters, said she would like to see such initiatives become a Paralympic surfing event, which has just become an Olympic sport.

Maila bakoitzean, lehengo saria 600 eurokoa izango da, bigarrena 300ekoa and hirugarrena 200ekoa. Gainera, olatu onenaren hartzaileak 1,000 euro irabaziko ditu. Sariak berdinak izango dira emakume zein gizonentzat. Domekan, arratsaldeko 18:00etan egingo dute sari-banaketa.
“Mugak buru barruan daude”
